Breakdown

BEAUTIFUL JOLIE GABOR, HER GLAMOROUS THREE DAUGHTERS, AND ALWAYS THE HAPPINESS IS LIFE

SUMMARY:

Expansive and lush, Beautiful Jolie Gabor, Her Glamorous Three Daughters, and Always the Happiness is Life is a musical fantasy that traces the history of the first family who became famous for being famous. Examining society’s fascination with celebrity culture, Beautiful Jolie Gabor… centers on family matriarch Jolie Gabor, a Hungarian WWII immigrant who voraciously creates a life where persecution can never affect her family again. In the choices she makes and the not-so-truthful stories she spins, Jolie must answer the most telling question:

What is the cost along the way? And, then, what is the cost at the end? Much like the real-life Gabor Family, five-time Tony Award nominee Michael John LaChiusa’s newest work, starring three-time Tony Award nominee Mary Testa as Jolie Gabor, absolutely mesmerizes.

SEEKING:

MAGDA GABOR: Female-Presenting; 25-50 yrs. old Alongside Mary Testa as Jolie, four actors portray Jolie's three maids and butler who in turn throughout the show, become/transform into her three daughters (Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva) and two husbands (Vilmos and Edmund). Magda is the oldest daughter and the only one who never pursued a career as an actress or performer. She is a socialite for certain but not directly inside show business like her sisters. She is incredibly smart and played a significant role in building her mother's successful jewelry/costume jewelry business. During World War II, she was an active member of the Hungarian Resistance and organized the family's narrow escape from the Holocaust. Of Magda, Jolie says, "Magda is most thoughtful of my daughters." She possesses instinctual comedic chops and natural physical grace. Comfortable with her femininity. Doesn’t have to LOOK like Magda, or SOUND like Magda, but she has to FEEL like Magda: a Gabor, a daughter created by Jolie. Soprano to high A, more of a “dramatic” soprano sound versus a coloratura sound. Legit but in the musical theatre sense, not necessarily operatic. Speaks with a Hungarian accent.

JOLIE GABOR: (THIS ROLE IS CAST) matriarch of the Gabor family, truly vivacious and full of life. Wickedly smart and wildly blunt. Extremely controlling of her daughters and their careers. Mezzo. Age range 55-75. Speaks with a Hungarian accent.

MAID/EVA GABOR: (THIS ROLE IS CAST) the youngest of the Gabor sisters. Highly intelligent. Does not suffer fools. A truly talented movie star who desires to play great roles. Always at odds with her mother. Mezzo with a strong belt. Age range 30-45. Speaks with a Hungarian accent.

MAID/ZSA ZSA GABOR: (THIS ROLE IS CAST) The middle Gabor sister. Incredibly witty and funny and goes through life as a true bon vivant. Loves men and was married nine times. Unlike Eva, more interested in being famous than acting. Mezzo. Age range 35-60. Speaks with a Hungarian accent.

BUTLER/VILMOS GABOR/EDMUND: (THIS ROLE IS CAST) Jolie Gabor's two husbands and father of the Gabor sisters. Proud, stubborn, patriarchal, romantic, and madly in love with Jolie. Seems to have fallen out of a 19th Century operetta. Baritone. Age range: 45-65. Speaks with a Hungarian accent.
